FREEDOM OF SPEECH

11th January 2015
Today saw around 700 people take to the streets of Montpon Menesterol as a part of the show of unity that saw 40 world leaders march with arms linked in Paris. It is estimated that almost 4 million took to the streets in France, the largest gathering in the country’s history to show defiance against the serious of terrorist attacks that left 17 dead,
Phrases born to support the show of unity ‘Je suis Charlie’ , ‘ Je suis Ahmed’ a tribute to the married police office with young children who died attempting to protect the staff of the contraversial magazine ‘Charlie Hebdo’ and ‘Not Afraid’ a reference to the premis ‘ The pen is mightier than the sword’ were seen around the world.
The impact on France of the terrorist attacks has yet to be seen but it is clear that the magazine will continue despite the threat of attack and France is mobilised to protect its fundamental freedoms.
‘I may not agree with what you have to say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’ Voltaire
Imagine what could be achieved in the energy and passion involved in these events could be utilised to promote
living together in harmony!
